Established in 1865, ATCHISON COUNTY, played a significant role during the expansion of the west. The land now known as Atchison county was first used by Indians and trappers. Lewis and Clark also passed through this rich land on their expedition. The first settlers established farming practices with the Pottawatamie. The county soon became a thoroughfare for the wagon trains that were heading West but also for transporting materials to the East.
Atchison County was an important part of the future of the Winning of the West, with progressive leaders encouraging growth and establishing Atchison County as a major stop on the way out West.
The county now demonstrates its flexibility and forward thinking once again to bring its state and country into an energy-independent future of clean, renewable sources of power for the ever increasing amounts of electricity we use.
Let's appreciate the rich history of Atchison County and build a responsible
future to pass on!
